Emap-therapy used in treatment of X-ray-induced cancer complications

Aim: In recent years acupuncture points are treated not only with needles but also with medical devices. A device of the kind mentioned (EMAP-express-01 ) has been invented and tested by one of the authors during a period of 3 years, which proved a high degree of its efficacy in treating various disorders. The aim of the study is to investigate the possibilities of EMAP-therapy in treating X-ray-induced complications occurring to cancer patients.
Method: The patients were 11 women aged 38 - 70 diagnosed with cervical cancer (4 patients), vaginal wall cancer (6 patients), liposarcoma of the pelvic bottom ( 1 patient). Treatment was administered once a day during a period of 10 days. Acupoints Neiguan (PC6), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Guanyuan (CV4), Zhongwan (CVl2), Liangqiu (ST34), Yinlingquan (SP9) and Yanglingquan (GB34) were treated as suggested (in 1996 by Dr. Yeh Chong Chan, Maryland Acupuncture clinic, USA). The treatment exposure of one acupoint did not exceed 3 minutes. The treatment was supported by phytonutrients, the following data were registered: the blood cell content, the lipid oxidation, the antioxidant activity, hair and nail microelement content.
Results: After 2 - 3 treatment sessions 8 women suffering from X-ray- induced vaginal and vulval mucosa impairment experienced a considerable decrease in pain; after 10 treatment sessions the epithelium recovery was registered. The control group not exposed to EMAP treatment, experienced the epithelium recovery during 1,5-2 months with a severe pain syndrome persisting. After 2 treatment sessions 2 patients experienced the loss of the incontinence symptom which had been caused by the X-ray therapy and had been persistent during 5 - 8 months.
Conclusion: The results obtained testify to the efficacy of EMAP- therapy in treating the effects of X-ray therapy (the pain syndrome and the mucosa impairment), both immediate and long-term.
